The Gouvães pumped storage power plant in northern Portugal is part of Iberdrola's Tâmega Hydroelectric Complex on the Tâmega River near Porto, and it began commissioning in 2021. ANDRITZ designed, manufactured, supplied, installed and supervised commissioning of the complete electro- and hydro-mechanical equipment. That equipment includes four 220 MW reversible high-head pump turbines with motor generators, plus electrical power systems developed specifically for the project. The plant works across a net head of about 700 m, pumping water between the upper Gouvães reservoir and the Daivões reservoir below. Its four units provide peak-load and rapid-response regulating power for a grid where wind generation plays a growing role.
