It uses a horizontal axis rotor with a specially designed variable-speed pitching mechanism and a nacelle yawing system, so it can harness tidal currents in both flood and ebb directions, while sensor-driven automatic control software adjusts the leading edge for optimum output. The turbine is designed for flows up to and above 5 m/s and water depths down to 100 m, and is deployed on the seabed and held in position by gravity, pins or pilings depending on the site. The 1 MW HS1000 was deployed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney, Scotland, in December 2011 to validate the technology for commercial tidal arrays, and was certified by DNV in 2013.
