The Mk1 is the ANDRITZ Hydro Hammerfest tidal current turbine supplied as three 1.5 MW units to the MeyGen project in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth, Scotland. It builds on the HS1000 pre-commercial turbine tested at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney. The horizontal axis rotor has a specially designed variable-speed pitching mechanism and a nacelle yawing system, so it can harness tidal currents in both ebb and flood directions. The turbines are fully submerged and deployed on the seabed, held in position by gravity, pins or pilings depending on the seabed and tidal stream characteristics. Major components are designed by ANDRITZ Hydro Hammerfest with ANDRITZ Hydro, and the offshore design accounts for storm conditions with a 50-year return period wave.
