It stores electricity from the grid, wind or solar by lifting gravity blocks and generates power again by lowering them. The blocks are made from waste materials such as incinerator bottom ash and construction debris. Built next to a wind farm and fully connected to the grid, the system shifts renewable energy for the State Grid Corporation of China and has been tested and commissioned with local grid authorities. Energy Vault projects a round-trip efficiency above 80% and a 35-year operating life, with no degradation of the storage medium and no self-discharge.
