Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Compressor Corporation (MCO) was awarded the compressor package for Heidelberg Materials' Padeswood CCS project, the first carbon capture and storage plant at a cement production facility in the UK. MCO will supply an integrally geared compressor to MHI to support the KM CDR carbon capture process, compressing around 2,700 tonnes per day of captured CO₂ for transmission into a pipeline for permanent sequestration. The compressor uses a high-efficiency impeller and has a compact casing designed for good maintainability. Its multi-shaft, multi-stage layout uses a wheel gear driving several pinion shafts, so changing each gear ratio lets every impeller run at its optimal speed for high-efficiency operation. MCO has also installed a dedicated geared-compressor test facility at its Hiroshima plant, with a dual-shaft test motor, to meet shorter lead times for CCUS compressor packages.
