Characteristics
1 of 4 fields · all sourced · retrieved 2026-10-23Project One Reactor is a medium-scale facility based on Hydrogenious' proprietary LOHC technology, built within the Living Lab Energy Campus at Forschungszentrum Jülich. It uses one single reactor to handle both the storage of hydrogen in LOHC and its release from loaded LOHC, with a hydrogen storage and release capacity of approximately up to 300 kg per day. Hydrogen produced by an electrolyzer from surplus renewable energy is stored in LOHC without losses over time, then released when renewable energy is scarce to supply the adjacent combined heat and power (CHP) plant, covering approximately five percent of its annual fuel requirement. The project couples electricity, chemical energy and heat: waste heat from the storage process feeds the campus district heating network, while the heat required for hydrogen release is sourced from the CHP plant's exhaust gas.
