Hours a year the compressor runs (loaded or modulating). Default 3,900 h, the Lot 31 value for a 120 l/s VSD (Task 7 Table 2-11).
Working pressure at the package outlet. Sets the isentropic reference power: 4.73 kW/(m3/min) at 7 bar(g), 5.10 at 8, 6.57 at 13. Default 8 bar(g).
Average air demand as a percent of the VSD's maximum FAD. Default 70 %, the 25/50/25 % weighting of the DOE and Lot 31 test points (100/70/40 % flow). The slider stops at 30 %: below the 19 % minimum flow of the measured part-load line the VSD runs load/unload and the calculator refuses the case.
Default 0.18 EUR/kWh, Eurostat non-household H1 2026, band 500-2000 MWh, excluding VAT and recoverable taxes.
Values the recovered heat as gas not burned in an 85 % efficient heater. Default 0.0616 EUR/kWh, Eurostat non-household H1 2026, band 10 000-100 000 GJ. Only the net variant of the cost uses it.
Real rate: every cost is in constant EUR 2025. Default 4 %, the Lot 31 / MEErP life-cycle cost rate.
Years over which the CAPEX is annualised. Default 13 years, the Lot 31 product life for 120 l/s (10 to 15 years by class; DOE: 12.5 years). Maintenance stays spread over the 13-year product life.

Sizes and costs an oil-injected rotary screw compressor package with a variable-speed drive (VSD), from the air intake to the package outlet at 7 to 13 bar(g). The dryer, receiver, network and its leaks stay outside. The size input is the rated motor power. The free air delivery (FAD, at 20 C and 1 bar(a)) follows from it: the package input power at full load is the rated power over a 92 % motor efficiency (DOE Sourcebook). The isentropic reference power of the DOE test method (10 CFR 431 Appendix A, p1 = 100 kPa, K = 1.400) is divided by the package isentropic efficiency of the DOE NOPR 2016 regression curve, which DOE transcribed from the EU Lot 31 database and which rises with flow. Because the efficiency depends on the flow it sets, the FAD is solved by Newton's method. At the defaults (37 kW, 8 bar(g)) this gives about 5.5 m3/min and 7.3 kW/(m3/min). The derivation reproduces the BOGE S-4 75 kW at -11 % on FAD. The FAD is converted to normal m3 (0 C, 1 atm) with a factor of 0.9196.
Three reference cases set the efficiency and the heat recovery: the DOE / Lot 31 curve with an air-cooled package, the same curve water-cooled, and the curve shifted by +1.7 % to pass through the measured Atlas Copco GA45VSD CAGI sheet (0.736 against 0.724 on the curve at 134 l/s). Part load follows a straight line, P/P_full = 0.07 + 0.93 x load, fitted on the six points of that sheet (residuals below 1.4 % of full power). The VSD weighted efficiency of the DOE curve is turned into a full-load value with the ratio 0.96 derived from the same line. Below 19 % of maximum flow, the lowest measured point, the VSD would cycle load/unload: the calculator refuses an average load under that, and the slider stops at 30 %.
The fixed-speed reference has the same FAD, sits on the DOE fixed-speed curve and draws 25 % of its full-load power unloaded (DOE: 15 to 35 %). DOE warns that this straight load/unload line underestimates real blowdown losses, so the VSD saving shown is conservative. At high load on small machines the VSD comes out worse, as DOE says it does near full output. That result is not clamped, and no payback is computed over a saving that can be negative. About 86.5 % of the input power ends up in the coolant (DOE: 80 to 93 %), and 85 % of it is recoverable on an air-cooled package (80 to 90 %) or 55 % on a water-cooled one (50 to 60 %). The result is low-grade heat (warm air or water up to 70 C) that can feed a heat pump or preheat boiler water, but cannot make steam.
The CAPEX is the Lot 31 end-customer purchase price of a 120 l/s VSD, EUR 13,462 in 2014 (which already includes the 45 % average discount on list price). This model maps 120 l/s at 8 bar(g) to 47.1 kW, and the price is scaled with motor power at exponent 0.91. The exponent is a log-log fit through that anchor on the Lot 31 price tables: it runs 21 % below the tables at 7.5 l/s and 19 % below at 960 l/s. Installation is 2.5 % of list. Everything is indexed to 2025 with the euro-area HICP (x 1.290). The result is about 390 EUR/kW installed at 37 kW, or 290 EUR 2014/kW on a purchase basis, inside Lot 31's 200 to 400 EUR/kW. Maintenance is 64 % of the list price over the 13-year product life, and filters cost 1.81 EUR 2014 per m3/h a year. The fixed-speed CAPEX is the VSD CAPEX over 1.298, the Lot 31 VS/FS ratio at 120 l/s. A customized installed EUR/kW replaces the model price at every size. Above 960 l/s (about 330 kW at 8 bar) the prices are extrapolated, and the efficiency curve is extrapolated below 7.5 l/s (about 5 kW).
The cost of air is annualised CAPEX at a real rate (4 %, Lot 31 / MEErP), plus maintenance, filters and electricity, over the normal m3 delivered. At the defaults (70 % load, 3,900 h, 0.18 EUR/kWh, Eurostat H1 2026) it comes to about 29 EUR/1000 Nm3, 85 % of which is electricity, at 0.137 kWh/Nm3 and 113 MWh a year. About 83 MWh of heat a year is recoverable. BEKO cites European Commission findings of 6 to 100 EUR per 1,000 m3, and 0.10 to 0.12 kWh/m3 for well laid-out stations. The heat credit, valued as gas not burned in an 85 % efficient heater, is reported as a separate net variant. Chain the electricity inlet to the site supply, and the recoverable heat (manual alignment) to a heat consumer such as an industrial heat pump.

4%Lot 31 / MEErPPackage boundary: oil-injected rotary screw package, motor, VSD and cooler, from air intake to discharge. The dryer, receiver, network leaks and pressure drop are outside. The FAD is derived from the rated motor power through the reference efficiency curves, not read from a product sheet; checked against the BOGE S-4 75 kW, it comes out 11 % low. The efficiency curve is extrapolated below 7.5 l/s (about 5 kW) and the CAPEX above 960 l/s (about 330 kW at 8 bar).
Market range Not applicable.
—MethodThe fixed-speed load/unload reference is sized for the same FAD as the VSD, sits on the DOE fixed-speed curve, and unloads at 25 % of its full-load power. At or near full output the VSD draws more than the fixed-speed machine (DOE): the saving goes negative at high load and is not clamped.
