Mass and energy balance

What the asset draws and delivers for the case and load you choose.

Reference case

First-year specific yield of the single-axis trackers with standard backtracking, before any agronomic steering. Default 1,372 kWh/kWp is a simulated bifacial tracker in a south-west German orchard (Bruno et al. 2025) and is site specific. The low end, 1,000, is the ISE northern-German fixed yield (935) times the same tracker gain (1,372 / 1,280).

Annual quantities at the current usage.

Peak DC capacity of the tracker field, in MWp (DC peak; the DC/AC ratio is a property of the plant, not of this unit). The slider covers 0.5-2 MWp: the Agri-PV class of the ISE 2024 cost data, inside the 100 kW-2 MW range of the NREL commercial ground-mounted model the size law comes from. Specific CAPEX follows (capacity / 1 MWp)^(0.87 - 1): x1.094 at 0.5 MWp, x0.914 at 2 MWp, kept within 900-1,700 EUR/kWp. Fixed O&M stays 15 EUR/kW/yr at every size (no size law is published for it), so the LCOE falls slightly with size; land, energy and revenue per hectare do not change with it.

Real weighted average cost of capital, as a fraction. ISE 2024 uses 3.5 % real for Agri-PV (5.3 % nominal with 1.8 % inflation). Costs are in constant 2024 EUR without escalation, so a real rate is the consistent one. The +/-1 pp slider span is a sensitivity range, not a cited one.

Share of the baseline electricity given up when the trackers are turned away from the sun to light the crop at critical growth stages. Published simulations: 20 % for apple trees (Bruno 2025) and 13.29 % for corn (Grubbs 2024). Stronger strategies in Gupta 2024 lose more (41.1 % of growing-season power for anti-tracking 6 h before solar noon; 45.6 % for whole-day anti-tracking, during flowering only) and are outside this calculator.

Installed kWp per hectare of farmland, set by the row pitch needed for machinery and light. ISE guideline: interspace systems 250-430 kWp/ha, nominal 350 kWp/ha; ground-mounted PV about 1,000 kWp/ha.

Crop yield per cultivated hectare between the tracker rows, relative to the same crop without PV. Default 92.9 % = 10,182 / 10,955 kg/ha of corn between trackers under standard tracking (Gupta 2024, one season). With anti-tracking at flowering the same study reports a yield similar to the control. Enter your own agronomic estimate: this calculator does not derive crop yield from the steering loss.

Price received per MWh, used only for the revenue per hectare and the steering arbitrage, never in the LCOE. Default 50 EUR/MWh is the volume-weighted average award of the whole December 2025 German first-segment solar tender (Bundesnetzagentur, 262 awards, mostly ground-mounted PV), range 44-53, used as a proxy: no award value specific to special solar plants or Agri-PV is published. It is a nominal 2025 value.

Gross market revenue of the reference crop per hectare without PV. Default 2,219 EUR/ha is winter wheat (E) at 85 dt/ha (LKSH, 2024/25 season, nominal), range 1,827-2,480 for 70-95 dt/ha. For a margin view, enter the gross margin instead (LKSH: 1,214 EUR/ha) in a separate study.

    About

    Calculator context

A screening model for single-axis PV trackers set between crop rows, where part of the tracking is given up at critical growth stages to light the crop. It answers the question a lender and a farmer ask together: what does the steering cost per MWh, what does the farm keep, and how much more does one hectare produce than splitting it between crop and ground-mounted PV.

Economics follow Fraunhofer ISE's 2024 LCOE study in constant 2024 EUR: 900-1,700 EUR/kWp all-in Agri-PV CAPEX (1,300 midpoint, not a survey value, as the default reference case at 1 MWp), scaled to the capacity with an exponent of 0.87 fitted on two points of NREL's commercial ground-mounted benchmark (1,422 EUR/kWp at 0.5 MWp, 1,188 at 2 MWp, never outside 900-1,700), or replaced by your own quote, 15 EUR/kW/yr fixed O&M, 3.5 % real WACC, 30 years and 0.25 %/yr degradation, the same basis as the vertical bifacial calculator of this series. The tracker yield before steering is 1,372 kWh/kWp (simulated bifacial tracker in a south-west German orchard, Bruno et al. 2025). Steering costs 20 % of it for apple trees (Bruno 2025) and 13.29 % for corn (Grubbs 2024). Interspace layouts carry 250-430 kWp per hectare (ISE guideline, 350 nominal) against about 1,000 for ground-mounted PV.

At the defaults the net yield is 1,097.6 kWh/kWp and the LCOE 80.4 EUR/MWh, of which 16.1 EUR/MWh is the price of steering; without steering it would be 64.3, inside the 52-119 EUR/MWh ISE prints for Agri-PV. With corn at 92.9 % of the control on the cultivated strips (Gupta 2024) and 7.7 % of the field uncultivated, the farm keeps 85.75 % of its crop and the land equivalent ratio is 1.16. Revenue is 21,110 EUR/ha/yr at 50 EUR/MWh, the average award of the whole December 2025 German solar tender used as an Agri-PV proxy (no Agri-PV-specific award is published), and 2,219 EUR/ha of winter wheat. One point of steering costs about 240 EUR/ha of electricity, one point of crop is worth about 22 EUR/ha: the calculator shows this exchange rate and never optimises it.

Read it with its limits: the steering loss comes from two simulations (apple in Germany, corn in Indiana), not from years of field data; the crop yield is entered, not derived from the steering; the 91 % figure in Bruno 2025 is a share of the light target, not a yield; the tracker baseline belongs to one site. Prices and crop revenue are nominal 2025 EUR and are never subtracted from the real 2024 LCOE. The CAPEX is all-in and exported as fully financed.

Evidence medium: one slope fitted on two printed points of one bottom-up model, a United States fixed-tilt commercial ground-mounted system transposed to a German tracker Agri-PV field; a currency-free ratio, so no USD/EUR or year conversion enters it. The slider is limited to 0.5-2 MWp, the ISE Agri-PV class and inside the 100 kW-2 MW range of the NREL commercial model; the two printed points span 0.5-1 MWp, so 1-2 MWp extends the fitted slope inside the modelled range. • Two price bases, kept apart. Costs and LCOE: constant 2024 EUR at a real WACC. Electricity price and crop revenue: nominal 2025 EUR, used only for year-1 revenue per hectare and for the steering arbitrage. The calculator never subtracts one from the other: the award is a flat nominal value for 20 years, the LCOE a real value over 30 years.

      Convention of this calculator
    • LER = crop yield retained / 100 + (interspace density x Y1) / (ground density x fixed yield at the site). The site fixed yield is Y0 x 1,280 / 1,372 so that a different site moves both yields together. The tracker gain 1,372 / 1,280 = 1.07 is derived from two sources for the same region (Bruno 2025 simulation, ISE Table 3), not measured on one site.

Market range Heggelbach 1.6 (2017) to 1.86 (2018), overhead layout.

      ISE Agrivoltaics guideline 2024
    • Crop yield and steering loss are two separate inputs. A one-line fit from the corn case (92.9 % at no steering, about 100 % at 13.29 %) would mix two papers and two sites, so it is not built in. The arbitrage outputs give the exchange rate between the two; the user sets both.

Market range No independent range cited.

      —
      Modelling choice, documented
    • The 92.9 % default is per cultivated hectare. The calculator multiplies it by the cultivated share (1 - 7.7 %), which gives 85.75 % per hectare of field. The DIN SPEC 66 % floor, the LER and the revenue use the whole-field figure. Using 92.9 % directly would overstate the LER by 0.07 and the crop revenue by about 160 EUR/ha.

      Gupta et al. 2024
    • The steering loss comes from two simulations, not from several years of field operation. The 20 % apple case and the 13.29 % corn case are the only published anchors; the slider stops at 30 %, and the stronger strategies of Gupta 2024 (41.1 % of growing-season power for anti-tracking 6 h before solar noon, 45.6 % for whole-day anti-tracking during flowering) are outside the model.

      Market range Published: 13.29-20 %; slider 0-30 %.

    • The CAPEX applied (model value or Customized) is all-in, so it is exported to a project as fully financed: the project adds no OSBL, indirect or contingency layer. VAT is excluded, as in ISE. The interspace mounting and installation figures of the ISE guideline are shown as an indicative breakdown and never added on top.

Market range Not applicable (boundary declaration).

      —
      Convention of this calculator
    • Results are checked against 40-180 EUR/MWh. Over all 1,280 corners of the eight sliders (capacity 0.5-2 MWp included) crossed with the three reference cases and the Customized CAPEX at 900 and 1,700 EUR/kWp, the LCOE stays between 42.8 and 175.4 EUR/MWh; the discount-rate slider is limited to 2.5-4.5 % real and the baseline yield to 1,000-1,400 kWh/kWp so that no corner leaves this range.

      Market range 40-180 EUR/MWh.

      —
      Bounds of this calculator
    • Over all slider corners: land equivalent ratio 0.83-1.41 (bound 0.75-1.6, the top anchored on Heggelbach's first-year 1.6), revenue 8,880-34,264 EUR/ha/yr (bound 7,000-36,000), net yield 700-1,400 kWh/kWp (bound 600-1,420).

      Market range Derived, evidence medium.

      —
      Bounds of this calculator
    • Excluded: hourly crop light modelling, crop production costs and subsidies, farm-side machinery effects, land lease, grid fees, curtailment, taxes, decommissioning and the value of crop protection (hail, heat). Steering is entered as an annual energy loss; the tracker control law is not modelled. Not modelled: economies of scale on fixed O&M (linear at 15 EUR/kW/yr), sizes outside 0.5-2 MWp, and inverter or tracker replacements as separate components.

      Market range Not applicable (scope).

      —
      Scope of this calculator
    • In a project, the electricity outlet is the lifetime-average annual generation after steering and degradation, as average MW. The all-in CAPEX is exported as ISBL with a fully financed battery limit and the fixed O&M as an undiscounted annual cash in constant 2024 EUR. Crop revenue is not exported: it is not an energy flow.

      Market range Not applicable (chaining).
