Reference case
Charge-discharge cycles a year at the chosen depth of discharge. 350 is the Lazard 2025 duty (1 cycle a day, 350 days); 365 is the PNNL warranty cap. Below about 310 a year the fixed costs are spread over too little energy and, at short durations, the LCOS leaves the sourced range.

Annual quantities at the current usage. Band width: share of energy in; non-energy flows are not to scale.
Nominal installed energy of the battery plant (MWh). The catalogue binds products here: Huawei LUNA2000 2.032 MWh, Sungrow ST2752UX 2.752 MWh, Sungrow PowerTitan 2.0 5.015 MWh per container. A fixed project cost of about 383,500 EUR (Lazard 2025, 2 MWh against 200 MWh at 2 h) is spread over the size: a single container costs about 190 EUR/kWh more than the 240 MWh NREL reference, and above about 100 MWh size barely matters.

Hours of discharge at rated power. Rated power = energy / duration. Short durations carry more power equipment per kWh (NREL power cost 372 USD/kW), so they cost more per kWh and per MWh delivered. The slider starts at 2 h, the shortest Lazard 2025 case: 1-hour units sell frequency services, and their cost per MWh delivered leaves the sourced LCOS range.
Share of the nameplate energy used per cycle. 90 % is Lazard 2025, 80 % is the PNNL baseline.
Average price of the electricity bought to charge. Default 24.9 EUR/MWh, the Lazard 2025 charging cost of 27 USD/MWh at 1.0824 USD/EUR. Divided by the round-trip efficiency in the LCOS.
Real weighted average cost of capital of the capital recovery factor. Default 6.52 %, PNNL-33283 Table 6.1. Real, because all costs are in constant 2024 money. A zero rate is handled (CRF = 1/n).

Containerised lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery plant of the Sungrow PowerTitan, Huawei LUNA2000 or Tesla Megapack type, connected to the grid. You set the nameplate energy (2 to 1,000 MWh), the duration (2 to 8 h), the cycles a year and the depth of discharge. The CAPEX follows the NREL 2025 update at its 240 MWh reference: an energy cost of 241 USD/kWh plus a power cost of 372 USD/kW (PCS, transformer, grid connection), all-in installed, in 2024 USD converted at the ECB 2024 rate. Size matters through a fixed project cost of about 383,500 EUR, derived from Lazard 2025 at equal 2-hour duration (1 MW/2 MWh against 100 MW/200 MWh): a single 2 MWh container carries about 190 EUR/kWh more than the reference, while above about 100 MWh size barely changes the cost.
The levelised cost of storage follows PNNL-33283 Eq. 1: CAPEX annualised at a real discount rate, plus a fixed O&M of 4 % of CAPEX a year, divided by the energy delivered, plus the charging price divided by the round-trip efficiency. That fixed O&M is the only replacement model: NREL sets it to counteract degradation at about one cycle a day, so the plant keeps its rated capacity and no cell replacement is costed on top. The efficiency basis only changes the round-trip efficiency: NREL 85 % with cooling, or, as an assembly with the same NREL costs, the PNNL 2022 LFP value of 86.0 % at the inverter or 82.6 % at the transformer.
At 100 MWh, 4 h, 350 cycles at 90 % depth, 6.52 % real and 20 years, the plant costs about 31.1 MEUR (311 EUR/kWh), delivers 31,500 MWh a year and gives an LCOS of about 158 EUR/MWh, inside the unsubsidised Lazard 2025 range for a 100 MW/400 MWh plant (106 to 235 EUR/MWh after conversion; Lazard is levered and after tax, so the comparison is indicative). No revenue, tax or subsidy: those belong to project mode.

20yearsPNNL-33283 / Lazard LCOE+ 2025Default of the discount rate slider (5-8 %). It is a REAL rate, consistent with costs held in constant 2024 USD/EUR with no escalation.
6.52%PNNL-33283Not used: PNNL pairs this low rate with a separately costed DC-block augmentation and a warranty, on a direct-cost base. Mixing it with the NREL all-in base would under-count O&M.
0.43%PNNL-33283Low end of the Lazard 4-hour LCOS. Indicative: Lazard is levered, after tax and in its own dollar vintage, while this calculator is a pre-tax real annuity in 2024 money; the comparison places the result, it does not validate it.

255.9EUR/MWhLazard LCOE+ 2025, convertedPublished all-in 4-hour cost, same boundary as the model (fully financed installed system). The model reproduces it at 4 h by construction of the NREL equation, so it places other durations, it does not validate the 4-hour point.
308.6EUR/kWhNREL 2025, converted at the ECB 2024 rateMethod: PNNL-33283 Eq. 1-3. LCOS = (CRF x CAPEX + fixed O&M) / energy delivered + charging price / RTE. CAPEX from the NREL 2025 split (energy cost x energy + power cost x power), converted at the ECB 2024 rate. Energy delivered = nameplate energy x DOD x cycles a year (PNNL Eq. 3).
—UnspecifiedReal terms: all costs in constant 2024 money with no escalation, annualised at a real discount rate. The yearly O&M exported to project mode is an undiscounted cash cost that does not depend on the discount rate.
—UnspecifiedScope: standalone cost of storage. No arbitrage, capacity or ancillary-service revenue, no tax or subsidy; those belong to project mode.
—UnspecifiedDuty for which the NREL 4 % fixed O&M holds the plant at rated capacity. It is the validity limit of the only replacement model used here; the cycles and depth sliders (at most 365 x 90 % = 328.5 equivalent cycles a year) stay below it.
1cycles/dayNREL 2025Turns the NREL one-cycle-a-day basis into cycles a year.
Market range Exact by definition.
365days/yearNumerical constantDegradation: one replacement model, the NREL 2025 flat rate. The 4 % fixed O&M is set by NREL so that the plant performs at rated capacity throughout its life at about one cycle a day (p.11); delivered energy is therefore held at its rated value and no cell replacement or augmentation is costed separately. A cycle-life-driven replacement (such as the PNNL-33283 2,400-cycle LFP case with its own 0.43 % O&M and DC block prices) is a different model and is not mixed in. At much higher cycling NREL warns the rate may not suffice; the duty output shows where the user stands against that basis.

200MWhLazard LCOE+ 2025Energy of the small Lazard size anchor, the size of one Huawei LUNA2000-2.0MWH container.
2MWhLazard LCOE+ 2025Size: CAPEX = proportional part + fixed project cost. The fixed cost is derived from Lazard 2025 at equal duration (2 h): the 1 MW/2 MWh standalone system costs 483.5 USD/kWh all-in (DC + AC/2 h + EPC midpoints) against 278 USD/kWh for 100 MW/200 MWh; spreading that gap over 2 and 200 MWh gives about 415,000 USD (383,500 EUR) of cost that does not scale with size (permitting, interconnection, engineering, management: the 'Fixed' items NREL lists in its cost categories). The NREL 2025 figure already carries that fixed cost spread over its 240 MWh reference, so the specific CAPEX is the NREL value plus the fixed cost x (1/E - 1/240 MWh). It rises steeply at single-container size (+190 EUR/kWh at 2 MWh) and is flat at utility scale (-1.2 EUR/kWh at 1,000 MWh). Calibrated on one pair of Lazard cases: medium evidence. Lazard's C&I case is behind the meter; a grid-connected single container may carry a larger interconnection cost.
—UnspecifiedDescriptor shown on the page, not used in any formula: the size law is the fixed project cost, whose local exponent goes from about 0.71 at single-container size to 1.0 at utility scale. The page measures the local exponent at the current size.
