Annual quantities at the current usage.

Electrical output of the expansion turbines. The catalogue binds products here: Hydrostor Silver City is 200 MW / 1,600 MWh, Willow Rock 500 MW / 4,000 MWh. The PNNL scale law (8 % cheaper per kW for each tenfold size) is fitted on 100 and 1,000 MW: below 100 MW it is an extrapolation and an output flags it.

Full equivalent cycles you want a year. Default 365, the PNNL-33283 ceiling of one full cycle a day. The plant cannot do more than the clock allows (charge plus discharge time), and the model caps the request accordingly.

Hours of discharge at rated power; storage energy = power x duration. Silver City and Willow Rock are both 8 h. With the compressor rated at the turbine power, recharging takes duration / RTE, so above about 8 to 10 h a full cycle no longer fits in a day and the achieved cycles fall.

Average price of the electricity bought to charge. Default 26.3 EUR/MWh = the PNNL-33283 0.03 $/kWh at the ECB 2020 rate. Divided by the round-trip efficiency in the LCOS.

Real weighted average cost of capital used in the capital recovery factor. Default 6.52 %, PNNL-33283 Table 6.1. Real, because every cost is in constant money with no escalation.

Period over which the CAPEX is annualised. Default 20 years, the PNNL-33283 baseline. The physical calendar life of a CAES plant is 60 years (PNNL); it is exported to project mode as the asset lifetime and not used here.

About

Calculator context

Advanced adiabatic compressed air energy storage plant of the Hydrostor type (Silver City, Willow Rock). In charge, grid electricity drives compressors; the compression heat is taken out and kept in a thermal store (hot water), and the cooled air is pushed into an underground cavern, mined in hard rock and held at constant pressure by a column of water, or a salt cavern. In discharge the air comes back up, is reheated with the stored heat and expands through turbines. No fuel is burnt. You set the discharge power (50 to 1,000 MW), the duration (4 to 12 h), the cycles you want a year, the round-trip efficiency basis, the charging price and the finance.

The cost has two blocks, as in PNNL-33283: a power block (turbomachinery, balance of plant and EPC, 1,153 $/kW at 100 MW, the DOE 2023 estimate for 2030 of a diabatic CAES, transposed to the adiabatic plant) and a storage block per kWh. No source prints the A-CAES storage block (mined cavern, hydrostatic compensation, heat store, development), so it is calibrated with one free parameter on the Silver City total project cost published by ARENA (A$652.26m for 200 MW / 1,600 MWh): about 146 EUR/kWh, some 24 times the PNNL salt-cavern cost alone. The model therefore matches Silver City at 200 MW / 8 h by construction; that is the calibration, not a validation. Both blocks fall 8 % per tenfold size, the PNNL scale law fitted on 100 and 1,000 MW. Below 100 MW, and for storage energies more than a factor 2 from 1,600 MWh, the law is extrapolated and an output flag says so.

Hydrostor prints no round-trip efficiency. The default 60 % is the top of the 52-60 % range Wolf and Budt 2014 give for low-temperature adiabatic CAES; DOE 2023 quotes 70 % as an upper bound. The PNNL 52 % is for diabatic, gas-fired CAES and is shown as a reference only. The compressor is rated at the turbine power, so recharging takes duration / RTE: above about 8 to 10 h a full cycle no longer fits in a day and the cycles fall below the PNNL ceiling of 365 a year.

At 200 MW, 8 h, 365 cycles, 60 % RTE, 26.3 EUR/MWh charging (PNNL 0.03 $/kWh), a 6.52 % real WACC and a 20-year economic life, the plant costs about 2,150 EUR/kW (430 MEUR), delivers 584,000 MWh a year and the LCOS is about 115 EUR/MWh, close to 58 % of it capital. At the Willow Rock size (500 MW, 8 h) the model gives about 2,080 EUR/kW and 112 EUR/MWh. Two independent figures bracket the CAPEX: the ADELE estimate (HDR 2014, 10 h) is about 30 % below the model at 400 MW / 10 h, while the Willow Rock DOE loan principal alone is about 28 % above the model at 500 MW / 8 h, so the model is probably low for a 2025 US project. These comparisons mix 2020 USD, 2022 AUD and 2025 USD without inflation correction; the gaps are published as outputs, and the Customized option takes a quote. No revenue, tax or financing during construction: those belong to project mode, which reads this CAPEX as a total project cost.

  • LCOS of the PNNL-33283 type (Eq. 1), simplified: (CRF x CAPEX + fixed O&M) / energy delivered + charging price / RTE. No interest during construction, no tax, no revenue, no replacement within the 20-year economic life. Constant money, so the WACC is real.

  • The round-trip efficiency is a sourced system-level value, not derived from a compressor/expander chain: Hydrostor publishes no efficiency and no component split, so the model does not invent one. The PNNL and DOE test values (52 %) are for diabatic CAES and are shown as references only.

  • Charge time = duration / (RTE x charge power ratio). With the compressor rated at the turbine power, a full cycle fits in 24 h up to about 8.2 h (RTE 52 %) to 9.9 h (RTE 70 %); beyond, the achieved cycles fall below 365 and the LCOS rises. PNNL's own Eq. 2 applies the same clock.

  • Two parts of the slider range sit outside the sourced domain and are flagged: below 100 MW (the PNNL scale law rests on 100 and 1,000 MW; only the 40 MW Howitt power-island point touches that range), and storage energies more than a factor 2 from 1,600 MWh (the storage block rests on one calibration point).

  • Project mode chains the charging electricity (inlet, priced by the project) and the discharged electricity (main outlet). Fixed O&M is exported undiscounted; no variable O&M is booked, so charging is never paid twice. The CAPEX is a total project cost (battery_limit fully_financed), so project mode adds no buildup on top.
