Electrochaea's biomethanation plant uses a patented, selectively evolved strain of methanogenic archaea (biocatalyst ECH 0100) to synthesize grid-quality e-methane from green hydrogen and carbon dioxide as part of a Power-to-Gas system. In the 10 MWe configuration, the plant takes 2000 Nm³/h of H2 and 500 Nm³/h of CO2 and delivers 500 Nm³/h of CH4, along with thermal energy and metabolic water, with the reactor operating at 63 °C and 10 bar. The process is compatible with untreated CO2 from any source, including raw biogas, and the archaea show high tolerance to contaminants, no production of intermediates and rapid reaction kinetics. The technology is described as modular, scalable and load following, with mild process conditions and fully automated operation. Options include media/biocatalyst recycling, post-processing for local grid injection standards, a gas buffer module and winterization.
